Signs Your Brake Pads Are Going Out: Grinding, Squealing, and a Soft Pedal Explained

Brakes give you plenty of warning before they fail. Drivers just tend to explain the noise away for a few months first.
Worn brake pads announce themselves in a predictable order: a high squeal that comes and goes, then a squeal that never leaves, then a harsh grinding noise that means the friction material is gone and metal is cutting metal. Each stage costs more than the one before it.
Think about it this way: the squeal stage is a two-hundred-dollar problem, and the grinding stage is a six-hundred-dollar one. Same car, same week, different decision.
What Are the First Signs Your Brake Pads Are Worn?
Six symptoms show up long before anything becomes dangerous. Most drivers notice at least two and dismiss both.
- A high squeal when you slow down. Built into most pads is a wear indicator, a small metal tab positioned to touch the rotor once friction material drops to about three millimeters. That contact is designed to be annoying.
- A grinding noise under braking. The backing plate is now scraping the rotor directly. This stage damages parts that were fine a month earlier.
- Longer stopping distances. You find yourself pressing harder for the same result, especially coming down off US-290.
- Vibration through the pedal or wheel. Uneven rotor thickness makes the pedal pulse under your foot at highway speed.
- The car pulls to one side while stopping. One caliper is sticking, so one side does most of the work and wears twice as fast.
- Visible material through the wheel. Look at the pad pressed against the rotor through the spokes. Less than a quarter inch of friction material means it is time.

What Does Each Brake Noise Actually Mean?
Different noises come from different failures, and the sound narrows it down fast.
A light squeal on a damp morning that clears after a few stops is surface rust flashing off the rotors overnight. Normal along the Gulf Coast, no repair needed.
A steady squeal at every stop is the wear indicator doing its job. You have some time, measured in weeks, not months.
A deep metallic grinding noise is the end of the road for that set. Rotors are being scored while you listen, and what would have been a pad job becomes pads and rotors together.
A single clunk when you first brake points at loose hardware, a worn caliper bracket, or missing anti-rattle clips rather than the pads themselves.
Here's the thing: only the first one on that list is harmless, and it is also the only one that goes away on its own. Anything that persists past the first few stops of the day is telling you something real.

Why Does the Pedal Feel Soft or Spongy?
A soft brake pedal is not a pad problem, and confusing the two sends drivers to the wrong repair.
Pads control how much friction you get. The pedal feel comes from hydraulics. When the pedal sinks toward the floor or feels springy, air has gotten into the lines, a flexible hose is ballooning under pressure, brake fluid is leaking somewhere, or the master cylinder is bypassing internally.
Brake fluid also absorbs moisture straight out of the air, and moisture lowers its boiling point. On a long downhill with heavy braking, water in old fluid turns to vapor, and vapor compresses in a way that fluid does not. That is the sinking pedal drivers describe after a mountain trip. Most manufacturers call for a fluid flush every two to three years for exactly this reason.
A pedal that drops slowly while you sit at a light with your foot on it is a master cylinder symptom. Have that one looked at the same week.
How Long Do Brake Pads Last and What Do They Cost?
Between 30,000 and 70,000 miles covers most drivers, and the spread is entirely about how you drive. Stop-and-go commuting along FM 2920 wears pads two to three times faster than open highway miles. Heavy vehicles, aggressive braking, and hilly routes all shorten the interval.

Should You Replace Rotors at the Same Time?
Not automatically. The honest answer depends on measurement, not on a service advisor's habit.
When rotors can stay
The surface is smooth, there is no lip at the outer edge, thickness measures above the minimum stamped on the rotor hat, and the pads wore evenly. Fresh pads bed in fine against a healthy rotor, and you save a few hundred dollars.
When rotors have to go
Deep scoring from a grinding set, thickness already at or below minimum, cracks radiating from the vane area, or measurable thickness variation causing pedal pulsation. Many modern brake rotors are cast thin enough that machining them drops them under spec, which is why resurfacing has largely given way to replacement.
Bottom line? Ask for the measured thickness and the minimum spec side by side. Any shop worth using will show you both numbers.
